Suzie tended to overthink. It was one of her greatest character flaws and she knew it. It wasn't something she could just stop; she had tried over and over. Instead she had a coping mechanism to go with it. She held onto an unwavering exterior that betrayed nothing.

She could be feeling all the pain in the world, but it wouldn't reflect on her face. There were times that cracks formed on her facade, but even then, only a few people could see through her. One of them was her sister. And that was why Suzie was trying to gain her composure before she walked out her door.

It was Saturday and Kate had planned a big community sing-along, and the entire neighborhood was invited to Kate’s front yard to participate. Suzie couldn’t, for the life of her, understand how Kate had the energy to continually pull off events like this, but the Christmas spirit ran deep in some people, she guessed. And really, Kate had always been a bit of an overachiever.

Suzie had been happy all day at the thought of spending her evening singing Christmas carols and socializing. But she also felt nervous because she was certain that Nicole would be there. It had been several days since Nicole had come over for dinner and they had gone a bit further than expected before Nicole was abruptly called away. Suzie had loved every moment of their time together and had felt so bad when their date had been unexpectedly interrupted.

She had tried to hide her disappointment and luckily, she didn't have to pretend for long because Nicole had practically run out the door. They hadn’t seen each other in the days that followed because Nicole had continued to be swarmed with work at the hospital. Suzie had given her the invitation to the community sing-along with the hope that she would come. The nervousness she had felt earlier was due to the fact that Nicole would hear her sing. It was a talent that Nicole had no idea Suzie had.

As Suzie got ready to go to her sister’s, her phone rang. She looked at it and knew who it was immediately, even though the number wasn't saved on her phone.

It was Jack.

She refused the call immediately, not wanting to deal with him. He stressed her to no end and she hated it so much. She wanted nothing to do with him, but the man would not leave her alone. She had been tempted on many occasions to answer and hear what he had to say, but she knew that it would only make her more upset. It had already ruined her mood, even when she hadn't talked to him.

“Why is he doing this to me?” she asked no one in particular. Even Zara seemed to sense her apprehension, in the way dogs do, so he had gone over to her to try to comfort her, but it hadn't completely worked. She was still worked up as she closed the door to her home and prepared to head in the direction of her sister's house.
